What are standards?
Something which is used as an accepted measure, norm or model in a comparative evaluation is what we call as Standard. In essence, a Standard is an agreed way of doing something. Standards can cover a huge range of activities undertaken by the organizations and used by their customers. Standards are knowledge. They are powerful tools that can help drive innovation and increase productivity. They can make organizations more successful and make people’s life easier, safer and healthier.
Why do we need standards?
Standards can cover a wide range of subjects from construction to nanotechnology, from energy management to health and safety, from cricket balls to goalposts. They can be very specific, such as to a particular type of product or general such as management practices. The point of standard is to provide a reliable basis for people to share same expectations about a product or service. This helps to facilitate trade, provide a framework for achieving economies, efficiencies and interoperability.
How are standards developed?
Developing the standards is not an easy process. Like a symphony it requires a lot of people working together to develop a standard. A draft is prepared keeping in mind the need of the marketplace. This draft will then be reviewed by the technical expert committee which contains members from the different sectors such as government sector, private sector, academics, individual and Ngo’s. Involvement of public opinion is also there. After it, a final draft is prepared and once approved the Standard is published and available for sale.
